Bruce Schottland

Bruce Schottland is a founding partner of Harter & Schottland, P.C.. He is an experienced litigator. He began his career at a large civil defense firm in Chicago . After gaining valuable experience in the civil area, Mr. Schottland left the firm to learn the art of Criminal Defense. Since then he has conducted countless contested hearings and has taken hundreds of cases to trial. He has defended individuals charged with traffic, criminal misdemeanors and the most serious felonies. Further, Mr. Schottland has maintained a varied civil practice by representing individuals and businesses in areas such as personal injury, eviction proceedings and contract disputes.

Bruce Schottland was raised in Lake County, leaving only to attend the University of Illinois Law School. He is an active community partner and volunteers extensively. He is a longstanding board member for the Mano a Mano Family Resource Center where he also served as an Executive Board Member. He volunteered as a NICASA truancy court judge. He has also volunteered as a scholarship judge for the Round Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Bruce also served as President of Chapter 932 of the Experimental Aircraft Association for four years. Further, Bruce maintains membership in various bar associations. He has participated or contributed to many local philanthropic organizations including the McHenry County Community Foundation, Shop with a Cop, Lakeview Fishing Foundation, Round Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and others.

Bruce Schottland attended college at the University of Illinois where he received a Bachelor’s Degree. He then returned to attend the University of Illinois College of Law where he graduated with a juris doctorate degree Cum Laude. Bruce Schottland was admitted to the Illinois Bar in November of 2001.

Jeremy S. Harter

Jeremy S. Harter is a founding partner of Harter & Schottland, P.C.. Before founding the firm, Mr. Harter developed his broad knowledge and expertise at another well known law firm. There, he was responsible for municipal prosecution and assisting in municipal corporate issues for two large villages in Lake County. In addition, Mr. Harter developed a practice in other areas, as well. Today, Mr. Harter brings this varied background to Harter & Schottland, P.C. where he represents individuals and businesses in civil litigation such as landlord / tenant cases, contractual disputes, liquor commission hearings, Illinois Secretary of State hearings and others. Moreover, Mr. Harter has extensive experience litigating traffic, misdemeanor and felony cases in both contested motion hearings and trials, where he has enjoyed tremendous success.

In line with the firm’s commitment to the surrounding community, Mr. Harter also maintains a significant volunteer commitment. Mr. Harter has served as a judge for the teen court program administered by the Northern Illinois Counsel on Alcohol and Substance Abuse (NICASA). In this role, Mr. Harter has helped countless Lake County adolescents learn from their youthful indiscretions, avoid damaging marks on their records and continue to successful futures. In fact, in 2005 Mr. Harter was formally recognized and received the Partner’s Award for his commitment to community service. Mr. Harter also volunteers for the College of Lake County’s Women’s Center where he provides free legal assistance. He was also recently appointed to the Prairie State Legal Services Campaign for Legal Services Board of Directors.

Jeremy Harter attended Knox College where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with an emphasis in American History. He moved to Chicago thereafter to attend The John Marshall Law School. Mr. Harter was admitted to the Illinois Bar and licensed to practice law in November of 2001.

Alan Lenczycki

Alan Lenczycki is an associate at Harter & Schottland, with a practice area focused on family and criminal law.

A former prosecutor for six years in the State’s Attorney’s Office in Lake County, Illinois, Alan was a senior Assistant State’s Attorney in Lake County’s dedicated domestic violence courtroom for over two years. There he obtained valuable experience with orders of protection and the intersection of family and criminal law. As a prosecutor with the Gang Task Force he also provided legal education to the Lake County Gang Enforcement Unit on effective gang prosecutions. Now, his practice centers on navigating families through the difficult transition of divorce and child custody issues, with a focus on helping kids and helping parents protect their rights. He also has extensive trial and motion experience litigating DUI, traffic, and serious misdemeanor and felony cases.

Alan has volunteered giving free legal advice at A Safe Place women’s and children’s center in Zion. A longtime Lake County resident, he is on the Board of Directors of the Exchange Club of Grayslake and is co-president of the Lake County Bar Association’s Young and New Lawyer’s Committee, where he has provided education and training to other attorneys in the criminal law. He graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a J.D. from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago.

Ramon Cervantes

Ramon Cervantes has worked for Harter & Schottland, P.C. for more nearly twelve years. In that time, he has defended hundreds of individuals charged with traffic, misdemeanor and criminal felony offenses taking many to contested hearings and trial. Ramon also represents people with real estate closings and has an outstanding record of success in driver’s license reinstatement hearings.

Ramon is a lifelong resident of Lake County, being born here after his mother and father immigrated to the United States in 1964. He is fluent in both English and Spanish and takes a particular interest in assisting local underprivileged persons in need of legal help. Ramon volunteers his time on a weekly basis by providing free legal advice to members of the Holy Family Parish in Waukegan and Mano a Mano Family Resource Center in Round Lake Park. He consults on issues ranging from divorce, child custody and violations of the law to contract disputes and immigration concerns. Ramon also organizes free legal seminars in the Round Lake Area in furtherance of his volunteer efforts.

Ramon was educated at the University of Iowa where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. He received his Juris Doctorate from the Thomas M.Cooley Law School, where he was Senior Associate Editor of the Law Review. Ramon was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 2005.

Robert Deters

Robert Deters is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison as an undergrad with a degree in International Relations. He also graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Madison’s Law School, receiving his J.D. in 2005. Prior to even graduating from law school, Mr. Deters worked at the Innocence Project at the University of Wisconsin for a year gaining valuable knowledge in how to right wrongs committed in the criminal justice system. He also spent a semester interning with the Wisconsin Supreme Court where he helped prepare briefings for Justice Louis Butler.

After law school Mr. Deters has worked primarily as a criminal defense attorney throughout the Chicagoland area. He has practiced and tried cases in Cook, DuPage, Kane, McHenry, Boone and Lake Counties. In addition to representing clients at all levels of criminal cases, he also has done license reinstatement before the Secretary of State. His defense practice has also lead him to do Firearm Owner’s Identification Card denial appeals. Last, Mr. Deters represents those needing assistance with immigration cases, applying for visas, citizenship, DACA or other immigration matters.

Mr. Deters is highly regarded as an attorney by both his peer lawyers and judges alike. He has served multiple terms as the President of the McHenry County Bar Association Criminal Law Section and has also lectured to practicing attorneys of the Lake County Bar Association.

Robert Deters is a tireless advocate and takes his responsibilities to his clients with the utmost seriousness. Mr. Deters believes that no case is unimportant and every client deserves the time and attention needed to address their concerns.
