New Illinois law lets courts supervise minors who share indecent images, imposing counseling or service.

In 2011, Illinois created a new law addressing minors involved in the electronic dissemination of indecent visual depictions. Under this statute, a minor who distributes or shares an indecent visual depiction of another minor using a computer or electronic communication device may face a petition for adjudication and be deemed a minor in need of supervision.

If found in need of supervision, the court may order the minor to obtain counseling or complete public service hours. Importantly, this statute does not prevent minors from being prosecuted for other crimes, such as disorderly conduct, public indecency, or related offenses.
