Police will increase DUI, seatbelt, speeding, and distracted driving enforcement this Memorial Day.

The attorneys and staff at Harter & Schottland want to wish everyone a fun yet safe Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. Memorial Day is a special time of year when winter is firmly behind us, kids are almost out of school, and American flags wave proudly, honoring our heroes.

However, Memorial Day Weekend has also come to be associated with increased roadside safety checks and safe driving campaigns. Please be aware of the heightened scrutiny on the roadways. The following list is not, by any means, exclusive:

Gurnee, IL – “The Gurnee Police Department with the assistance of the Secretary of State Police and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting a Roadside Safety Checkpoint in the 5300 block of Grand Avenue (IL Rte. 132) on the evening of Friday, May 24, 2013. The checkpoint will begin at approximately 10:00 PM and will operate into the early morning hours of May 25th. This Roadside Safety Checkpoint is conducted in an effort to promote seatbelt use and to ensure that motorists are operating their motor vehicles in a safe and sober manner.”

“Illinois State Police (ISP) officials are reminding motorists to take the necessary safety precautions for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend travel. The Memorial Day holiday weekend is one of the busiest travel periods for motorists and thousands of drivers are expected to hit the roadways and interstates.

In addition to the statewide Click it or Ticket safety campaign, beginning on Friday, May 24 through Monday, May 27, ISP will push for zero fatalities statewide by enforcing the four most common traffic violations (Fatal 4): Speeding, DUI, seat belts, and distracted driving.

Seatbelt enforcement details and speed patrols will be a top priority for law enforcement statewide and the Illinois State Police will have zero tolerance when it comes to enforcing the Fatal 4…. State Troopers will continue to enforce all traffic violations during the holiday weekend. Last year, Illinois State Police issued 3,189 tickets for speeding violations during the four-day holiday period from Friday to Monday. During the same time period, there were 177 DUI arrests, 1,468 safety restraint violations, and 27 distracted driver violations.”
