On January 1, 2014, many of the laws passed in 2013 took effect. One of the most talked about is the Concealed Carry Gun Law. This law was enacted after the 7th Circuit declared Illinois’ ban on concealed handguns unconstitutional. With its passage, Illinois became the last state in the nation to permit concealed carry.

However, this new law does not allow you to carry firearms anywhere you wish. There are strict rules about who can carry, where, when, and how. For an overview of the rules and regulations surrounding concealed carry, please see our prior article.

That article did not cover where a person is not permitted to carry a concealed gun, even with a valid license. Prohibited places include:

• Any building, real property, or parking area under the control of a public or private elementary or secondary school.
• Any building or portion of a building under the control of a unit of local government.
• Any public gathering or special event conducted on public property that requires a local government permit. (This does not apply if the licensee must pass through to reach their home, business, or vehicle.)
• Any public playground.
• Any public park, athletic area, or athletic field under municipal or park district control. (Concealed carry is still permitted on trails or bikeways unless they run through such areas.)
• Any stadium, arena, or the property or parking area under the control of a stadium, arena, or collegiate/professional sporting event.
• Any area prohibited under federal law, including within 1,000 feet of a public, parochial, or private school.
